Interesting. Is this done with photoshop? I love the colors.

I sketched a draft outline with pencil, and then scanned it into my files.

Then I opened up my Paintshop Pro, and coloured shaded it. I scribbled and added noise to the "wall," and then blurred it and did it again, till it gave me the effect I wanted. I was trying for sort of a stucco?

Thank you. I love the colours, too. I live for colour. The deeper and more saturated, the better.

Wow! Cool illo. It has sort of a mysterious feel about it.

Fun illustration. Whose cat left those prints?

Very cool illo! I love how the whole illo feels.

unknown: yep, there's a mystery afoot.

ellen: not that i'm pointing fingers, and certainly we should take some paw prints...but my money's on wildcat.

hmmm...we may wanna check Percy for wet paint...

miragee: thank you. it's good to see you!

Purple and lime green rock!!! A painted door leading to somewhere .. dododedah. Hmmm might be Hellcat's prints, but think she would have tipped the whole bucket of paint over :)

Catnapping said...

Thank you, misty eyed.

And lol, anonymous...that was supposed to be a window leading to somewhere!

That's what laziness will get me. I made a door the other night, and liked it so much, I borrowed a square of it to make this window...oyp.

I think wildcat would look great in green paint.

Hellcat said...

Anon is an IDIOT! Of course it's a window and I didn't do it even though I look superb in all colours };-}

Impressive colour palette and composition. Well done.

I love these colours too. And the process - why am I so old fashioned in my outlook?! It never even occurred to me to draw something, scan it in and then play...

I love the humor iun your work generally. cool stuff.

These colours are fabulous! And you got the stucco texture really well... but those catprints are a mystery...

Fabuloso use of colour -- as everyone else said (there are more than just me out there with excellent taste! :) -- and composition. Love the strong simplicity.

Teri said...

How very creative and love the colors!

Jessica Wong said...

This is really cool. I could see how much work it is to create such details in the colours.

WOW Catnap! This is a wonder! Loved your explanations! You are GOOOOD! And the colours. I agree with the "more saturated, the better"...

Sandy said...

Yes! Great colors, agreed, ... some of which have been tracked on out of the frame... cool added touch. Great illustration.

hellcat: what's that stuff on your feet?

detlef, sal, andrea, teri, jessica, merlinborg: thank you so much. i find myself opening the file just to look at the purples. i'm gonna hafta make something else purple.

sal: what's nice about PsP, is that if I mess up, and can just ctrl+Z the mistake away!

caroline: i'm looking for green prints now. blogspot wouldn't let me look at many blogs today. i'll need to go check out the sandbox...

shane: oooo, red is my favorite colour in the whole world.

sandy: moi? my paws are clean.

and uh...that song sounds like sumthin' they'd sing on lawrence welk! of course, i'd only know that cuz i read it somewhere in a book about old people.

twisselman: if we were to follow those prints...

hmmm...

This is very cool! I love the colors you've chosen here.

Wow, this is a really exciting image with mystery colours. I love the paint jar, makes this a riddle. I combined it to your blog name (the odd neighbor) and it gave a certain freeky feeling to me.

I'm a colour freek, too, nice to meet others like that. Great work.

cool! reminds me of those windows and chairs in Greece.

carla said...

I absolutely love this! It looks like the favorite chair of some old lady who likes to sit and watch the people pass by. I was also interested in how you did this - thought it was a photo - but I saw your explanation as soon as I oppened this page. The colors are amazing...I love the deep saturation, and I love the combination of purple and green. Beautiful:>

The Tart said...

hello catnapping...out of respect of your fancy IF chair post, I have woven a story including you in my current post. i invite you to stop by and read about yourself!

please leave a comment and let me know if there is more to my story...lovely chair!

Hi Cat,

thank you for the link; much appreciated. I've taken down my sites to reorganize them because I don't think trying to show my budding photography really mixes well with the rants on the same site. When they're back up I'm going to link you; but I am linking your from underxopsed now.

Also, have you thought about selling your prints? If you have, a suggestion I have would be to build them in 300dpi, rather than 72 (aplogies if you already know this). 300dpi is a much cleaner print on graphic work.

Great contrast and I think the pencil gives the picture that little extra. Great work!

great illo and love the shadowy-misty effect..

I love how you got the little cat paws going across the chair.

Love this illo a lot!! Great color contrast, and texture!

great style!!! It looks so mysterious, I want to explore that room !

Green! I wonder what's outside the window (or is it in the cupboard?)

Regina said...

Striking color combo! Beautiful!

Catnapping said...

thank you all for your comments. i'm gonna try and make more like this one.

underxposed: thank you for that information. i don't know very much about the dpi...i'm assuming my jpegs must use the 72 dots per inch you're referring to. is it a bmp file i need to convert to to get the 300dpi?

i've been toying with the idea of making postcards and blank "greeting" cards with the Geometry (using a different haiku), Escape, and Night entries. maybe the guys at the local kinkos might be able to talk me through it.

Amy Zaleski said...

Very surreal and dreamy...I really thought it was a photo, too.

I absolutely love the colors and the stucco effect, beautiful!

Wilnara said...

Wow!!!! You got an exceptional image with your experimenting! I love the colors and how rich the texture is especially the green paint in the bucket. It makes me want to reach out and try to see if I'll get any green paint on my fingers. Great Image!

I also enjoyed the great use of color...and, the paw print...neat!! VERY nice!

Wow! I thought I'd looked at yours out already, but I'm glad I checked! Those colours are a knockout and overall this is a lovely and striking picture. Who'd have thought purple and green would look so fantastic!

I use Paintshop too! It's my preferred computer tool, but I put things into Photoshop if they need to be converted to CYMK colour for printing :).

Majestic colours !

thanks so much for explaining (well, partly) how you did this... Must have been a great drawing to start with... and your choices of "noise" and colors are inspired and mysterious. I especially like the paint bucket.
