Innocent Sprouts

Yesterday I must have pulled 40 seedlings from an
area no bigger than the size of a table napkin.
Cute little green round leaves on tiny, fragile
stems. They seem so innocent.

And aren't they? All they want from this world is
to soak in some sun and cool water - maybe feel
the tickle of bumblebee's kiss.

Is it immoral to weed? Since all life is sacred,
am I wrong to yank up these poor babies by their
roots and toss them into the dirt road?
Do they know they're dying? Do they feel
the sun's heat burning their pale naked roots?

Do I have the right to sacrifice their lives?

Do the sunflowers and sweetpeas worry that they're next?

The same thoughts I have when I weed !
I like the way the seedlings try to avoid the hand.

Kill them!! It's ok, they aren't that innocent. ;-)

Alina said it well, this is elegant. I like the clear colours too.

I grew produce for restaurants for a number of years, a lot of my time was spent erradicating weeds - never spraying though, I still don't feel an ounce of guilt about yanking them out.

OMG! There is someone out there who thinks like I do! I actually keep the pretty weeds...I've been known to remove plants in areas that are destined for developement! I was happy to discover there is a new kind of business catching on in our area called "Plant Retreivers." They retreive plants from areas where normally they would just yank and toss before redevelopement!
I am in awe of your art! You are an inspiration!

I spent a summer or two weeding organic garlic, let me tell you, those things fight back! (I know what you mean though)

I've never heard my grass talk, but it's probably because my lawnmower is too loud! :)

Really enjoy the text and illustration. They make me think. Penny, http://superkittyjumpsoff.blogspot.com/, has an interesting psychological sequel to this one, entitled ‘pulling weeds, planting seeds’.
