We have a terrible housing shortage here too, both on land and in the trees! Beautiful drawing Catnapping, I had to blink to realise it wasn't a photograph :)
i am going to bet i have a housing shortage because i must have 8,000 birds living in my trees :)

tsduff and mick: I know I haven't been around. I've had a few medical problems, but I'm feeling much better. I just have to take it easier. But I promise to be by this week. (probably today, actually.)
adorable bony bird dinosaur: Yep. She said my hands could never forget what a bird was shaped like. and then there's always stick figures. at first i couldn't even remember how to make a blade of grass!

anon: a couple of months ago i found a book at the library with blueprints for making proper bird houses...geared to the needs and wants of specific birds (especially the smaller ones who have been bullied by the starlings around here), but the instructions were too complicated for me. i would love to find a way to provide some proper housing for our smaller urban birds.
betmo: i envy you all your birds. i live in town these days, and there aren't even half the birds here that there were around my old place. but i do what i can to attract the ones that are here. lotsa peanuts and bread crumbs...and cut up portions of tossed away fat from the butcher (for the crows - they love me, that's for sure).

'Proper housing' for the littlies would most likely be shrubs but a few hollow logs and hanging baskets might also help *tweet*
I am always jealous when friends have birds nesting in their yards... I consider it an honor and a privilage when one deigns to find lodging in my acreage. I'm concerned about your health - hoping you are back to everything good now.
